Luol Deng’s story has been that of struggle, hope and perseverance enabling him to fight against all odds to become one of the most recognisable faces of the NBA.

Luol was born in Wau, Sudan where his family were forced to immigrate to neighbouring country Egypt, to escape the 2nd Sudanese civil war.

Luol’s family were then granted political asylum to the United Kingdom where they found a base in London, which until this day is still their family home.

Deng began to shine in both soccer and basketball at school in London. His natural talents meant joining the u15 teams in both sports, where his love for basketball grew more and more eventually joining the Brixton Topcats basketball squad under the watchful eye of legendary Coach Jimmy Rogers.

In 1999, the decision was made for Luol to pursue his dreams in the USA, where he attended Blair academy. During his second year he was considered the 2nd most promising high school senior player in America, after LeBron James. After graduation he chose to attend Duke University, Luol became only the 10th freshman in history to lead all rookies in scoring, rebounding and field goals. In the 2004 NBA draft he was picked seventh by the Phoenix Suns but was immediately traded over to the Chicago Bulls, a team he had dreamed of playing for growing up watching Michael Jordan. Now in his 9th season at the Bulls, Luol is the co-captain and one of the faces of the franchise striving to win a NBA championship.
